Here’s How To Build That AV Room In Your High Rise

For many homeowners, it is a dream to have a dedicated audio-visual room. These spaces operate as a chill out zone for family members as they gather to enjoy quality family time together.

However, such dreams become more of a challenge when the home is in a high rise unit. With neighbours top and bottom as well as on all sides, the close proximity means it is imperative to keep the sound from travelling.

Here are several tips for aspiring AV enthusiasts looking to set up a home cinema inside a high rise unit.

Sound proofing

This is not as extravagant an undertaking as it may seem. There are a number of DIY options available with sound absorbing materials that can be strategically placed on the walls.

Thick carpeting will also help absorb sound. One option is to ensure all the gaps within the window and door frames are sealed to minimise vibration. For those with deeper pockets, there are specialist consultants who can install the necessary paddings to make the home almost studio-like, ensuring that no sound escapes. It is all a matter of budget.

Choose the right equipment

For those who are building a home theatre system, the temptation is to go with the latest configurations. These usually feature multiple speakers and subwoofers. This may not be a good idea for a high rise unit, especially floorstanding speakers and bass-heavy subwoofers, which lead to sound travelling through the walls and floors.

There is much to be said for a simple stereo set-up with smaller bookshelf speakers, which can provide endless enjoyment when set up properly. Those with the cash to spare can consider some higher end equipment which prioritise clarity over loudness, allowing for great audio detail even at low volumes.

Placement

Ideally, the speakers should not directly face the wall of a neighbouring unit. If possible, turn their backs from such walls as the bass reflex will travel.

Best would be with the main speakers placed against a wall that is outward facing (ie facade of the building) or towards another room within the unit. Careful placement can help greatly in isolating noise pollution and if placed correctly inside a room, may only require minimal sound proofing for maximum enjoyment.
