The HCK-SEGi team recently won third place in the inaugural Unit Kerjasama Awam Swasta (“UKAS”) PPP Cup 2017 badminton tournament. The team, comprising staff from the HCK Group and SEGi University and Colleges. They were represented by Phuah Chee Keen, Jonathan Chong and Samuel Tan from HCK Group and Dr May Heong, Mak Yi Ying and Carynne Loh from SEGi University and Colleges. The team won RM750 in prize money during the two-day event.
Held in Puchong, the tournament saw 64 teams comprising government agencies and private sector, taking part. It was organised by the Sports Club of the Public-Private-Partnership Unit, under the Prime Minister’s Department.
The team is managed by HCK Group Executive Director, Corporate Services, Leong Choong Wah, who’s also an avid shuttler. Despite being an underdog, the team beat teams from Ekovest, JL99, the Elections Commission and IJM. It lost in the semifinals to the Armed Forces team, which went on to win the tournament.
“We started as an underdog but at the end of the tournament, we came out 3rd out of 64 teams. HCK+SEGi team was the best team from the private sector category. Our players put in very good efforts,” said Leong.
The tournament is the first ever held, and aimed at enhancing relations between the public and private sectors. This is also the first time HCK and SEGi teamed up officially, although both groups had taken part in friendlies in the past. Both public-listed companies share the same boss in Tan Sri Clement Hii.
