Children from the Hiichiikok Foundation Home for Children Care was recently feted to a Deepavali lunch by the Rotary Club of Pantai Valley. Some 20 members of the club and their family members joined the Home’s volunteers in celebrating the Festival of Lights with the children.
Dressed in traditional Indian attire, the children enjoyed traditional Deepavali fare. The kids also took part in a quiz session after getting to know the guests better. To show their appreciation to sponsors, the children put up a dance performance, practiced only over two days under the guidance of volunteer, Ashleigh Tang.
Parents or family members of Hindu children were also invited to celebrate the festive in the Home. A week before Deepavali, the children had put up a kolam in front of the Home to add to the festive cheer.
The Home has made it a point to celebrate major festivities. This is to allow the children to appreciate their own traditional heritage, as well as others’. Celebrations are often low-key but meaningful.
