For most students, getting good grades is no mean feat, what more if one came from a single parent family. But Ma Pei Kei showed adversity is no obstacle for her as she emerged one of the top students in SMK Sentul Utama.
Her academic achievements were acknowledged at her school’s Hari Anugerah Cemerlang 2016 (Academic Excellence Awards Day 2016).
Pei Kei, one of the children from the Hiichiikok Foundation Home for Children Care, won awards for scoring the highest marks in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Visual Arts papers. Thanks to her top marks, the 13-year-old was also first in her Remove Form.
Pei Kei initially struggled to fit in at the home when she arrived in December 2014, but after coming to terms with her situation, she focused on her studies. Diana Ooi, who is the Foundation Home manager, credits Pei Kei’s form teacher for guiding the teenager.
According to Ooi, the teacher known as Ms Tan would stay back after school to help Pei Kei and other students with their homework. Occasionally, Ms Tan would visit the home to take Pei Kei and the other children out for a game of badminton. Ms Tan has since been transferred to a school in Penang.
Pei Kei’s achievement is certainly the pride of Hiichiikok Foundation Home for Children Care. Her determination, together with the home’s support and her teacher’s guidance, proved to be a recipe for academic success. She also sets a good example for the other children in the home to follow.
Kudos to Pei Kei – well done and keep up the good work!
