Raising a child requires unique skills. Any mother can tell you that.
On the other hand a totally different level of commitment, plus a unique set of skills and knowledge, are essential for those taking care of underprivileged children.
Caregivers at the Hiichiikok Foundation Home For Children Care were given the opportunity to pick up these special skills recently.
Psychologists from the Lighthouse Psychological Wellbeing Centre, which is based in Petaling Jaya, held a workshop on childcare for care providers at the Home. Among other things, the care providers were taught the finer points of raising psychologically healthy children.
At the three half-day sessions held over three days, the psychologists explained how psychological health is as important as physical health in a child’s development. They also offered tips on how to raise these children, some of whom are from a difficult family background.
The psychologists are now giving free counselling to children at the Home. There are two one-on-one sessions twice a week. These sessions will be carried out over six months.
The training is made possible with the help of supporters and well-wishers.
