Malaysia’s leading business weekly Focus Malaysia, recently hosted its third annual Best Under Billion Awards 2017. The awards, initiated in 2015, are aimed at honouring the best mid-and small-cap listed companies on Bursa Malaysia.
In its third year, BUBA has grown both in size and stature with more awards given out in 12 categories. The awards ceremony was once again graced by Guest-of-Honour, Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan.
The awards were segregated into two major groupings – Group A for companies with a market capitalisation of RM150 mil to RM499 mil and Group B for those with a market capitalisation of RM500 mil to RM950 mil. Judging was done based on the companies’ latest financial year results, as well as its track record for the last three years.
Sabah-based plantations company, Innoprise Plantations Bhd was the night’s big winner as it walked home with both the Best in Revenue Growth and Best in Profit Growth awards. It also emerged as the Overall Winner after securing the highest overall score to beat all other contenders.
The Best CEO (Editors’ Pick) Award was won by Elsoft Research Bhd’s CEO Tan Cheik Eaik. Elsoft Research was founded by Tan in 1996 as Siangtronics Technology Sdn Bhd (STSB), before assuming its current name in 2003.
This year also saw the introduction of two new categories. The first is Best Online Presence which was created to recognise the increasing use of web technologies by investors and stakeholders to provide information about their operations companies.
In Group A, the award was won by Sasbadi Holdings Bhd, while in Group B, the winner was Hektar REIT.
Another new award which was introduced this year was the Best Turnaround Story. The award recognises hard work and fortitude taken by the management to change the fortunes of a struggling company. Notion VTec Bhd emerged as the winner in Group A, and Pelikan International Corp Bhd in Group B.
The ceremony, held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, was attended by over 360 guests from the Malaysian corporate scene, regulators and government agencies.
The judging criteria and vetting of winners were validated by global audit firm, KPMG. The research was conducted by Anderson Market Analytics Sdn Bhd, a local market and consulting firm.
The awards had the generous support of main sponsor, Exim Bank as well as co-sponsors Volvo Car Malaysia and M&A Securities. Focus Malaysia was also proud to have the support of Bursa Malaysia for the second consecutive year.
Also present were Focus Malaysia Sdn Bhd Editor-in-Chief Toh Lye Huat and its COO Dan Loh.
