Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who attended with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, was the guest of honour at the gala 2017 Malaysia Press Night at Shang ri-La hotel ballroom in Kuala Lumpur event on April 21.
Also present was Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
During his speech, Najib warned about the dangers of fake news on social media and said if fake news was not curbed, it would endanger society and the economy.
“The media has a role to report the truth, to act as watchdog to police the other three pillars of the Government and to help the public make informed decisions, whether in politics or business,” he said.
The night also saw the guests, made up of the various media outlets and corporate sponsors, entertained by the four “singing datuks” – Datuk Khadijah Ibrahim, Datuk Nash (Nashrudin Elias), Datuk Hattan (Mohd Shukri Shahabudin) and Datuk Malek Ridhuan – who belted out classic Malay hits.
The award night is an annual function organised by MPI to acknowledge the past year’s best journalistic works and was first held on Sept 17, 1981.
