The recent Malaysian Press Institute (MPI)-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2016 saw Focus Malaysia’s Associate Editor Sonia Ramachandran take home the consolation prize in the Best Feature category.

Sonia, who had submitted three property-related articles for the awards, won RM1,000 and a certificate.

The first prize for the category went to Utusan Malaysia journalist Laupa Junus.

A total of 291 entries for 20 categories were received by the MPI, with the winners bagging RM10,000 each.

The best journalistic work across all categories was named the Kajai winner, which comes with the cash prize of RM30,000, a trophy, as well as a certificate.

This year’s winner was The Star’s R.AGE team, which also won in the Best Investigative Reporting category for its Predator In My Phone undercover project.

The Tokoh Media was awarded to Karangkraf Media Group CEO Datuk Dr Hussamuddin Yaacub.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who attended with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, was the guest of honour at the gala 2017 Malaysia Press Night at Shang ri-La hotel ballroom in Kuala Lumpur event on April 21.

Also present was Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

During his speech, Najib warned about the dangers of fake news on social media and said if fake news was not curbed, it would endanger society and the economy.

“The media has a role to report the truth, to act as watchdog to police the other three pillars of the Government and to help the public make informed decisions, whether in politics or business,” he said.

The night also saw the guests, made up of the various media outlets and corporate sponsors, entertained by the four “singing datuks” – Datuk Khadijah Ibrahim, Datuk Nash (Nashrudin Elias), Datuk Hattan (Mohd Shukri Shahabudin) and Datuk Malek Ridhuan – who belted out classic Malay hits.

The award night is an annual function organised by MPI to acknowledge the past year’s best journalistic works and was first held on Sept 17, 1981.
