Focus Malaysia’s Cheah Chor Sooi took home the coveted CG Writer of the Year award at the Minority Shareholders Watchdog Group’s (MSWG) Malaysia-ASEAN Corporate Governance Transparency Index, Findings and Recognition 2016 event.
The award is to “recognise an individual who has contributed towards good corporate governance (CG) practices among PLCs and for highlighting issues on minority shareholders through his articles in the media”.
For his efforts, Cheah, who is Executive Editor at Focus Malaysia, received a trophy and a certificate from MSWG Chairman Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob and MSWG CEO Rita Benoy Bushon.
The event took place on Dec 15 at Sime Darby Convention Centre, Bukit Kiara Kuala Lumpur, and was organised by MSWG.
The watchdog also conferred awards to listed companies as a testament to the significant roles they had played in terms of upholding CG and transparency in conducting their business.
There were altogether 12 categories of awards, including Excellence Award For Top CG And Performance - Overall Category and Special Category; CEO of the Year; Excellence Awards for Long-Term Value Creation and ESG Practices; as well as several Merit Awards.
MSWG was set up in 2000 as a government initiative to bring about awareness primarily on matters pertaining to minority shareholders interest and corporate governance through shareholder activism and engagement with stakeholders.
Its four founding organisations are the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera, Lembaga Tabung Haji, Permodalan Nasional Bhd and the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
