As Chinese New Year approaches, a group of young adults made a surprise visit to the Sincere Care Home on Jan 24 to bring cheer and joy to the old folks living there.
Led by Focus Malaysia writer Ooi Chia Shen, the team of 25 volunteers distributed red packets and mandarin oranges, much to the delight of the senior citizens.
Besides that, the youths held a fundraising campaign and collected RM3,000 as well as groceries from families, friends and work colleagues who donated generously.
The money was used to purchase items needed for the home.
Ooi spearheaded the project after reading an article about a senior citizen couple who were abandoned by their son and relocated to the home.
In two weeks, he roped in friends and fellow journalists to help him spread the word and assist in the fundraising efforts.
During their visit, the group brought groceries and other daily necessities based on the home’s wish list. The volunteers also spent time chatting and entertaining the old folks.
Sincere Care Home, which is located near shopping centre Metro Point Kajang, is a home care centre comprising three landed residential houses which caters to senior citizens and special needs patients.
Madam Dana, the person in charge of the home, says the home needs financial assistance as it has two months’ rent outstanding and due in January, totalling RM9,000.
